I have an English Budgie that is now 2 years old. I purchased him from a local professional parrot breeder who no longer breeds their pairs. Lately I've been feeling like my little budgie could use a companion. He's very tame and trusting, speaks a dozen or so phrases and is very much a big part of the daily household excitement! Earlier this week I saw a sweet little male budgie at the Pet Smart that I sometimes buy supplies from, and thought maybe he'd be a good fit. I set up a second cage this morning and got everything ready to maybe take the plunge. I figured I'd call the store ahead of time and ask them how they collect a budgie from the big glass aquarium they keep them in....and I'm disappointed in the response I got from the man over the phone. He said they "just grab them with their hands". I asked him if there was a different, less frightening way to go about it. Then he claimed that after they catch them they can tame them in 10-15 minutes... I told him that's unfortunately the behavior of a bird scared stiff, not a tame bird. ( You cannot tame an animal with force, however you could certainly break their will. Which can no longer be defined as "tame", as tame defines a bond built on trust). Then suggested maybe a less traumatic approach to collect a bird, maybe using treats to lure a bird to a small travel cage. He then raised his voice to talk over me and stated their methods are absolutely the way a bird can be tamed and that they will not change their practices. He then said he had customers waiting and hung up. Guys, is there a better way to collect a bird from a group cage without terrifying it? I'm so bummed out and disappointed in the employee at that store. Most of the girls there are really great. I just want the birds to be respected and treated with some consideration, as well as the people interested in buying them. I can't stress enough how difficult it is to win over a birds trust after its been chased around and forcefully grabbed at. Most birds never bounce back from that kind of treatment, and then people are disappointed to find their pets won't have anything to do with them. There are better methods, I suggest contacting our amazing local Avian veterinarians and discussing options. Professional parrot owners can confirm this information.
