I have always been HoH due to complications from a cleft palate, frequent ENT infections and surgeries but over the last two years my hearing has significantly declined and I now wear two hearing aids. When this happened I was struggling and reached out to the Canadian Hearing Society's "Hearing Care Counselor" in the Muskoka region for assistance. They came to my workplace and worked collaboratively with my employer to develop strategies for me to be successful at work. In addition to that, they also supported me to manage other avenues of my life- basically providing me with tips and advice on how I can navigate the world as a HoH person and how to adjust to my hearing aids.- This was a huge change for me and it required a lot of work. I am happy to share that with the Canadian Hearing Society's support, guidance and non-judgmental assistance I was able to successfully overcome much of the difficulties that were arising. The CHS "Hearing Care Counselor" was a source of support when I was feeling extremely overwhelmed. Being able to hear new sounds that I did not know existed, and then learning how to adjust to my new lifestyle was at times very difficult. I am a community developer in my full time career and with that I am frequently involved in events, conferences, outreach and networking and I was concerned that my hearing loss and the challenges I was experiencing with my hearing aids would affect my career. The CHS assisted me to successfully manage this as well and I am no longer anxious about my career and I am confident that I can succeed. I cannot thank the CHS enough for all of their support.
