This is a great lighthouse! Not only is it still an active navigation light, AND open for climbing tours on a regular schedule (for a modest fee), the tours also include other buildings that have been or are being restored with careful historical accuracy, the staff is super nice and knowledgeable, the grounds are pretty, the gift shop has lots of neat items, and it is really easy to drive right there on city streets and park in a large lot. I have been to many lights -- on the Great Lakes and various coasts -- and this is one of the best in the U.S.

Enjoyed the tour. Barb was knowledgeable about the lighthouse history. They had a cute gift shop and the views from the top of the lighthouse were beautiful. They are in the middle of renovating the keepers house . But it was cool to see the space they lived in. The steps going up are no joke. Remember, you have to come back down. There's 94 I believe and the are steep and small. I made it back down without falling. Don't go up if you even have an inclination you won't be able to come down. Enjoy

The tour was descriptive, with many plaques and reading material. There is access to the beach (no lifeguard) and a theater that plays a short historical video. The lighthouse itself is beautiful, full of history.

Neat and still active lighthouse. We took a small guided tour for 8 bucks (I think) and saw some old buildings located nearby, learned about the history and could go up the lighthouse, which you can't otherwise. Prepare to have shoes where they can't see your toes or they won't let you on the tour.

We visited this lighthouse yesterday. It's the oldest lighthouse in Michigan and the second oldest on the Great Lakes. The lighthouse resides in a county park which is well take care of. It was restored to its former glory in 2011 and looks great. The volunteer staff working at the lighthouse were very friendly too.
