CanaDream

We rented a truck camper from Canadream for our two week adventure through the Yukon and Alaska and we would not have wanted to do this trip any other way! The booking process was so easy and the staff answered all the questions we had. Highly recommend buying the extra kilometre package to save on charges at the end! The team is very thorough on their walk through and although we have RV’ed all our lives it’s very important to list so you don’t have any issues on your vacation. We have zero complaints about our time both in the camper or with the team as everything was top notch! Everything we could have needed was in the truck camper with the convenience kit and made our trip through this beautiful territory top notch. We will be renting again from Canadream on our next trip back to the Yukon.

Normally I don't write these reviews , preferring to give feedback in person, but in this case, reading some of the nonsense here, I feel compelled to share my experience. We rented a large (32 foot) RV from Canadream Whitehorse to explore the Yukon, including the Dempster Highway all the way to Tuktoyuktuk. Our experience from the moment I called to make the booking (directly with the company) was excellent. I will do my best to be thorough in this review. The short version : excellent vehicle, even better people and customer support. Beginning with the cons: (1) this is not a cheap vacation. The RV's are expensive to rent and they eat gas which is very expensive in Yukon. So don't go complaining when you get the bill. There are no hidden costs, nothing should surprise if you are paying attention. Which brings me to (2) - You have to pay attention! When you go to pick your vehicle up there is about an hour long session before you drive away. In this hour (or longer) they explain absolutely everything you need to know about your vehicle, what to expect, and what to do when things go wrong. They explain all the charges you can expect - nothing is "hidden" - and you are given ample opportunity to adjust your contract and make changes as you see fit (extra mileage, cleaning , etc). I highly recommend that you take the extra package that includes a full cleaning of the vehicle when you return - even your last set of dishes! This nonsense about people not being adequately informed about how to operate the vehicle is simply not credible. It makes no sense to think that they would send you out unprepared as they are responsible for you on the road and have a 24 hour 800 number you can call for assistance. We were told in meticulous detail how each and every feature of the RV operated and how to manage all of the many functions. I read one review where someone complained that the awning was not in operation - in fact we were told the awning was disabled and why - this is also clear on the website and in the user guide. I suspect the couple in question simply did not hear this or did not understand the instructions given. So what's good? In addition to first rate staff, the vehicle was in pristine condition and worked perfectly. The manual provided explained everything we were told at pick up, with pictures and diagrams, and came in handy several times. The idea that people were left without a sewage hose is mind boggling to me as the hose was used by the staff member who walked us through the demonstration of how to purge the sewage and grey water tanks. As well everything we needed was provided - there was not a single item out of place or missing. When we returned the RV we had broken two glasses and these were replaced without charge. More significantly, our unit had two outdoor speakers (disabled) at each end of the awning, one of which had obviously been damaged. We could not remember ever having seen it and despite this being an expensive item the staff determined that it broke as a result of a fault in the installation and not through any negligence on our part ! On a personal note I would say that while the Dempster is a magnificent road, filled with incredible scenery, it is not a drive for the faint of heart. Built on permafrost, when the gravel surface gets wet it turns into a sort of clay soup right down to the permafrost making for some very dodgy conditions. When the road is dry it forms massive ruts and a washboard surface which will shake you to your very core. You will get nowhere in a hurry, so take your time and if you are not familiar with driving in difficult terrain then I would advise going only as far as Tombstone Park. The Interpretive Centre and Campground there are fantastic and you can do day trips, hikes and overnight camping in the interior if you want. I highly recommend against the road to Tuk if it is raining, or has been raining.

We rented one of the big RVs suitable for 6 persons for a skitouring trip to the Rockies around Banff and Revelstoke. CanaDream's staff was very helpful, always friendly and attentive. Even during the booking process I got live support via the chat. The introduction to the vehicle was very thorough and for me almost a bit too long ;-) but better save than sorry. When we had troubles with our RV during the rental period, the CanaDream team was very helpful and recommended us a local mechanic that fixed our RV in no time. Although I think the interior of the RVs is sometimes not the best quality (this is up to the manufacturers) we had a wonderful time with it :)

Tonight I met a really nice couple from Germany at the Dawson city, YK music festival. They had no idea how to hookup the services on their Ram 3500 Pleasure way van from Canadreams in Whitehorse. After doing their hookups for them except the sewer hookup, because the tube is too short and is missing one end, useless piece of garbage. I told them, what I would do is purchase a proper sewer tube and charge Canadreams for it, as it should have been supplied along with some training. I asked why they weren't using the awning. They said that it was broken and therefore ziptied. What kind of nonsense is this? One rents a van and can't use the awning. Half the fun is being able to continue your enjoyment even if it rains. I advised them to cut the zip ties and use the awning anyway. But they said they were scared about what the company would do, if they did. What kind of useless company are you running? These things should be in tiptop shape and have complete inventory. The guy across from them also has a Canadreams van and has no zip ties on his awning. I have a 1998 Pursuit from Georgie Boy A class with a 454 power house and am not new at this game.

After hearing first hand accounts from my girlfriend and her friend about a trip up the Dempster highway, I would highly recommend that nobody ever use CanaDream for a vehicle camper rental: - vehicle manuals were not provided; - vehicle fluids were not filled; - vehicle was not serviced; - camper was not weather-proofed; - camper did not have bedding; - when vehicle broke down outside of Inuvik, CanaDream was unhelpful and created more problems they provided assistance; - CanaDream would not provide an alternate rental vehicle to continue trip; - CanaDream would not authorize anything other than a subcompact car as a replacement because they "didn't want to pay for a truck" - despite the fact that they were in INUVIK; - CanaDream wanted to take the vehicle, without providing a replacement or alternate lodging, for an unspecified amount of time - effectively abandoning the girls at their out-of-town campground; - Driving Force mechanics and technicians provided all required support to get the vehicle back on the road There's a lot more than this, but it should be enough to provide you with a base expectation.
