My experience with Luther Home has been excellent. I admitted my husband, Ralph, to Luther Home earlier this year because of advanced dementia. I found it difficult to make the decision to admit him because we have been married for a long time and never been apart for any length of time. The staff at Luther Home made the process a positive experience. Their care and concern for both Ralph and me has made our difficult journey much easier. I am very grateful that Ralph is being well taken care of and I can once again be his wife without being his caregiver.

We visit Luther Home often - 2 to 3 times a week - and have found the staff at Luther Home to be very caring with our Mother, certainly open to discussion and questions, committed to providing good care and a stimulating environment with lots of activities. And as my Aunt noted, it may not be the newest facility but is very clean. Our experience is that staff interact very positively with residents - and again we are there frequently to see it. The staff from reception to social workers to program managers to the fabulous nurses and care workers have made it a point to know our family and contact us to discuss any issues or points of decision. We wish Mom could be home, but are pleased with the care she is receiving.

Our extensive experience with Luther Home has been a rewarding one and continues to be rewarding one. My mother (93 years old) was admitted to Luther Personal Care Home in February 2013; with the foresight of Luther Home's Social Worker, in March 2013, he assisted us in also placing my father (96 years old) into the Luther Home Apartments (adjacent to the Luther PCH). At this time, my parents were married 68 years and were content to be in such close proximity; together, they were able to participate in many of the social / recreational / spiritual activities. We visited several times a week and were impressed with how the staff and especially the residents included us their Luther Home community. Overall, the Luther Home Staff ... everyone from the medical director, doctor, nurses, social worker, health care aids, recreational activities director, dietary, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance and office and more) all went out of their way to make my parents' stay comfortable and meaningful. When my father's health declined, Luther Home was able to admit him to their personal care home; and, in quick order, once again, both my parents were sharing a room together and ended up celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary with a wonderful Luther Home celebration. Up to the time my parents passed, they were treated with loving care and compassion. We still continue to be involved with Luther Home's residents and staff; and, for us this is a testament to the mission and spirit of Luther Home – everyone who walks through their doors matter!

The staff at the Luther Personal Care Home do not appreciate the involvement of the residents’ families. They do not welcome discussions about the residents’ care. They take every comment as a criticism, instead of an opportunity to improve communication and care. Open communication is critical to the wellness of the residents, and staff should always be open to answering questions and discussing care plans, in a mutually respectful environment. And if the staff have a problem regarding a resident or family members, they should be open and forthcoming about it, instead of harbouring resentments which inevitably harm the resident. The Luther Home is a very small facility, with very conservative, small-minded administration. Decisions are made behind closed doors, and input is not welcome. Discussion is not encouraged. Diversity is not welcomed here. The administration should re-read their mission statement and start to follow it. Compassion. That’s what is missing in their dealings with their community.

DO NOT SEND YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS HERE. My grandmother was denied care here based on a grudge held by the head of nursing toward another family member (not the one in need of care). To deny someone care when they are at their most vulnerable is un-Christian, un-empathetic, and they should be ashamed of themselves.
