Having lived in Lincoln Park for over 5 years has been a learning experience about life and aging. I had been recently widowed so after some research my family and I selected Lincoln Park for my new home. That meant independent and protected living for me, while living near my family. This move required selling our family home - a major upsetting event for any senior in that situation. However, the Lincoln Park staff - always caring, understanding and being most helpful - assist all new-comers to settle into their new home. In addition, help is available 24 hours every day by the push of the call button. All staff know us by name. We have a daily activity program which allows everyone to choose how to spend their days. Twice a week a van brings you to the place of your choice into town. The in-house program offers different types of games, discussion groups, art classes, exercise classes, as well as educational sessions about diabetes, nutrition, and management of medications, scam warnings, iPad lessons and more. We also have picnics at various locations in beautiful Niagara Region. One special event, which took place in October, was a visit to Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake to attend the musical: "Me and My Girl". It was delightful! I enjoy new friendships with other "oldies". We live together through happy and sad times. Although we may all have some aches and pains, and sometimes have trouble hearing we all have the luxury of being free of former responsibilities and are living well in our retirement residence. What have I learned? Enjoy your senior years and choose the residence best suited for you while you are still capable to do so, before others are forced to make that decision for you.
