Being newly married, my new husband and I (and our kitty Waifer) came back from a trip and decided we did not want to live in his house or my apartment anymore. He said to me I know where we are going to live - it is on Eglington and I've watched it being built from the bottom up, it's Scarlett Heights Retirement Residence. We arrived, met with the sales team and they showed us the available units. We chose one - a one bedroom overlooking Buttonwood Park, kind of just like living in the country in the summer time, and I’ve been here ever since (almost 11 years now)! I have found that the working staff are just the greatest people, our meals (like all places, have a few things to grumble about) but the beautiful a la carte selection to choose from makes up for thar. The rooms are kept very clean and I don't have to shop. We have a bus on hand though that will take you on outings and on shopping trips in the community too. I have met many dear friends here who we share day to day life with including attending many of the programs offered. There are many, many programs to choose from including cards, exercises, church services, educational talks and lectures, group entertainment, outings and programs with the local community. We also have a therapy pool which many places don't have. And we have a Tuck Shop that is open twice a week for everyday items and it is an excellent resource for those who cannot get out into the community. I can't speak highly enough either of the nursing care we have here either - there is always someone available to assist. Overall, I feel very secure, the diet is perfect (because there is choice!), there is no noise from my room (solitude), and being here almost 11 years, I have loved every minute of living at Scarlett Heights.

My husband and I have been here for 2 years now. The first year is a searching out and experimenting with different activities etc. Now we are well settled. Each person settles at their own rate. I, being more active have entered a few activities. After 2 years I realise that it takes tims, so I would sayto new comers...Be patient...it is a different life, but a very good one. You meet so many differnt people here, and it is an education. You ae not alone growing old...you learn from each other. In a way you see many new things and learn about yourself too. For any new people I would say to you...mix in with others...join the different activities and enjoy all the luxuries of care..housekeeping..no cooking to do..the entertainment and talk of your problems to the staff, wh o often find solutions for you I enjoy the Book club, always wanted to join one...the books are sent from the library, we read them and then discuss them once a month...A very enlightened group and fun. Also with a knitting club we can knit and give back to the community..I did a bit of this before , now do it with others...the garments go to the needy and we learn new skills. So much to tell, but perhaps I should say most of all...JOIN in the groups. I got grounded and settled this way. Eating needs care as it is easy to put on weight...resist the goodies and say No to big portions. I put on weight at first but now ration the goodies. When others first come in they often grumble...it is easy to get into this habit....so pass by the grumblers and find the more positive people...YOU WILL Be Fine. Walking out side is great..sitting in the sun too.
