A Fabulous Nursing Home in Niagara.

Our Mother 94 and Dad 96 have been residing at the Douglas J Rapelje Lodge in Welland for the past 14 months. They live together in the Veterans suite, Pod # 5, This facility employees 100 % loving and caring staff. These fine women and men treat our parents as if they were their own. The home is very clean and bright with large windows and flowers on the window sills. A lovely private garden next to the dining room is open for residents to visit and enjoy. The kitchen prepares excellent home stile meals 3 times per day. The home has RN staff and assistant staff 24 hrs. per day and their Doctor visits once per week. The nursing care in this home is second to none. The administrative staff are also first class in all departments. We are truly grateful to the Provincial and Regional Government for providing us with this very well run seniors facility in Welland.

The home "looks" good from the outside. But my loved one has been there for almost 2 years. The difference with her is that she is not bed-confined. She is very mobile and needs care and attention. She is very sweet, kind and easily directed. Yet we have constant problems with the staff - falsifying reports and not bathing or showering her, administering meds that are not approved, among many other things. The staff needs a major overhaul. Multiple times we have found our loved one in a state of neglect - covered in her own dried vomit and feces. The more you try to advocate for dignity and basic care needs the less the staff do and the more you are made to feel like it's YOU who is the problem. I would NOT recommend this home. At all. Infuriating and deeply disturbing.

First experience of navigating the world of long term care. Could not be happier with Rapelje Lodge. My father took up residence 6 weeks ago and I have yet to see an unfriendly staff member. The people are fantastic, the premises are clean and according to my Dad, the food is the best. So grateful that this place is there for my dad as he finishes the race.

This is a regionally run retirement home. It's clean, as welcoming as this type of environment can be. With the exception of a couple of people, I would say it shines on the staff alone. To be a nurse or PSW in somewhere like this should take a love of the job and a care of the people. I'd say about 90% of the staff exemplify that. The other 10% shouldn't be allowed around other human beings. Overall it is a necessary service, and I think it's makes the best of the cards it is dealt.

Big, airy and clean building. Visited my Uncle here and met up with one of his daughters to enjoy the stay. Easy access in and out parking for visitors. Gardens are well kept and I loved seeing pictures of our famous Welland Canal..always a treat seeing pictures of days long past..keeps me humble. Will revisit.

While the home is quite beautiful in itself there are some staffing issues inside. I have a dementia laden patient in here and unfortunately the staff seem to take the dementia as permission to forget to clean and take care of general hygiene daily. This of course leads to more medical incidents and less treatment from the staff. The staff are also riding a merry-go-round of new faces-rarely the same people. When you inquire about such things as this you are spoken to as though on script " I don't know". Nobody ever knows the answer which is a problem and goes right from the bottom staff up to the top. I would not recommend this home.
