When purchasing a new vehicle from this dealership in May 2018, I faced several issues. At best, the dealership was misleading, and ill-informed about several laws, but I am leaning towards dishonest and willfully ignorant. I have brought up these issues to the dealership and to Genesis Canada both over the phone and through email and although they promised a resolution; after waiting for months I’ve had enough. I figured at least I would write this review to encourage potential customers to take their business elsewhere. I would also like to point out that I have evidence for the claims I make here in the form of pictures, email trails, witnesses etc. (just in case anyone tries to refute them).
Chris (dealer) told me repeatedly that window tinting of 35% is legal in Ontario. A literal reading of the Highway Traffic Act, however, reveals that installing any amount of window tint on windshield or front side windows, could result in a fine as it is up to an individual police officer to determine whether a tint “substantially†obscures vision in your car. (Look it up!)
When I agreed to pay $400 for window tinting I should either have been informed of the relevant laws and been asked to assume the risk, or alternatively they should not have tinted the driver/front passenger windows (my expectation).
When I found out, I reached out to the dealership and they assured me that my tinting is legal. I asked them for a letter stating that either Genesis or the tinting company would be responsible for any fines that may be incurred due to window tinting and after 8 weeks of them coming up with excuses, no resolution is forthcoming.
Another example of the employees of this dealership not being aware of relevant laws was when Kenneth (the manager) was telling me about an unruly customer who refused Genesis plate covers claiming that they are illegal. Kenneth did not agree. However, sections of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario also make plate covers a discretionary illegal item. Don’t take my word for it, look it up yourself!
The customer should be presented with the choice of whether they want a license plate cover or not, and educated as to the potential risks this entails!
When I provided Chris with the ownership papers for the trade in, he was not aware that ‘plate portion’ of my permit stays with me. Neither Chris nor Kenneth could determine what documents I should retain! Didn’t matter as I had the plates changed but a car dealership should KNOW how these things work!
When driving my trade in vehicle from one parking lot to another, Kenneth essentially committed a hit and run. He backed into a parked truck trailer causing the trade-in vehicle’s tail light to be broken. Kenneth got out to inspect the damage and drove off without leaving any notes on the trailer.
When taking delivery of the vehicle I noticed that the rear bumper protector I ordered was not installed. It was only when I pointed this out that Chris explained that it would be delivered later.
I was informed by Chris that, 'the car uses 87 octane fuel'. After purchasing the vehicle, I read the manual and determined that it uses 91 octane fuel. When I asked them about this they told me that, ‘it CAN used 87 octane fuel but you will lose engine performance and power.’ I feel that THIS is what they should have told me before I bought the car.
I commented to Chris that I cannot wait for the break-in period (as specified in the owner’s manual) for the car to elapse as I would like to experience the full power of the engine and was informed that the ‘break-in’ period is a myth. Turn out, some people claim its not a myth... Now I don’t know whether I have damaged my engine during the first few days so I brought up this concern. I was told that Chris provided me with his 'opinion' and that I should probably default to what the manual says… If that's the case, then I should have been informed of this caveat in Chris’s statement rather than a firm statement saying, “That’s just a myth.â€
