On Monday May 28th, my daughter and I left our home in Hamilton Ontario at 5 a.m. to drive to Halifax, Nova Scotia for her university graduation. We were driving my 2014 Passat TDI 6 speed. At about 7:30 a.m., I was dozing and she was driving. She was in the fast lane of the 401 passing a vehicle when she saw what she thought was a dead animal on the road. She realized too late that it was some type of debris. As she drove over whatever it was, it flipped over, damaging the emergency brake cable, flattening the rear driver’s-side tire, and seizing up the brake. We had to be flat-bedded to a garage. While we were waiting for the CAA, we looked online for a garage that could get us in and out as quickly as possible. We could have picked anyone. Luckily, we picked Johnston Motors in Colborne. They ordered the new tire before we even got there. They had the car up onto the hoist as soon as they could, and worked on the seized up brake while waiting for the tire to be delivered. Ultimately, they had to cut the brake cable, which was no easy task from what I could tell. (Funny, because it always looks so easy in the movies.) Once the new tire arrived from Belleville, they remounted and balanced it and got us back on the road within a few hours. The bill was $344.00, including the $195.00 for the new tire. We were very vulnerable that day. My husband wasn’t with us. I know nothing about cars. We had to get to Halifax. Dana at Johnston Motors could have charged me $1000 or more and I’d have had no choice but to pay it. But he didn’t over-charge me. In fact, I suspect he under-charged me. Thank you to Johnston Motors! (This is my first Google review. I was curious about the one terrible review that Johnston Motors has. I clicked on the reviewer. He has posted 10 reviews, all absolutely horrible, for places that mistreated him in some way. I think he's got a bee in his bonnet.)

This place is a joke. Opportunistic individuals that pry on the uneducated. Unfortunately I was forced into using their services due to a breakdown. I was charged five hours of labour for something that should have taken less than half that. To make things worse the quality of the workmanship that was done was amateurish at best. Stating that the job quality that was performed was substandard is putting it nicely. I wired up stereos when I was a teenager and did a better job at wiring. You would think that a diesel injector control wire would be done with some care. Wire wasn’t even strapped to hold it away from the intake and exhaust manifolds or intercooler pipe and solder job was weak. Work was so poor that I had to reattach part of the wiring harness that they forgot to back to the wheel well to keep it in its place. No attention to quality or details. I was told that the person had over 50 years of experience that work on it … but I think they did it from a wheelchair. Total time worked on the vehicle - over 5 hours, time till it broke down with same error codes - 3 hours. If your car is broken down and you run across this place, push, pull or drag it to the next town and save yourself the headache of dealing with these clowns.
