Let me start by saying that we had an awesome time. We were in China so how cool is that! Having said that I need to add that it could have been so much better.
Pros:
1. Cheap.
2. Planned transportation. With the exception of the Tom bus in Beijing where the seats were broken and/or deformed, all buses were in new condition and comfortable. You will be in them for hours.
3. Hotels/Accommodations provided. With the exception of the Qube in Shanghai all the hotels were very nice. If you come during warm weather you might be faced with AC issues. Note that the Ritan Hotel in Beijing is under construction. Also note that meals, especially breakfast, is Asian cuisine. (Average price of hotels, according to Google, is $60.)
4. Entry tickets for museums, displays, events, plays etc were reserved & purchased in advance.
5. While some were better than others the Tour guides were professional, somewhat knowledgeable and offered their personal experiences to illustrate life in China. Hai Tao was a standout and a big thanks to May for the airport assistance.
Cons:
1. It will take a multitude of calls to straighten the itinerary and flight schedules. After corrections were made the same mistake appeared several more times. Don’t blow a fuse.
2. IMPORTANT: A key aspect of Rewards is to take you to predetermined product outlets for the purpose of getting you to buy the product at the outlets aka commission based shopping (Big surprise to us). Everyday you’ll spent a min of 2 hours in QVC styled demonstrations of tea, silk, jade, pearls, medical herbs (hilarious farce), clay figures etc. These purchasing events supposedly is what allows Rewards to offer a cheap price. I understand that aspect; what was frustrating is that Rewards made these purchasing events their priority with everything rotating around the sales (Shopping Hint: With few exceptions items offered at these events can be found all over for less money)
3. Dismal to nonexistent city tours of Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Xian. All tour guides neglected to provide location info/highlights as we traveled thru the cities on buses.
4. The $30 Grand Canal ride in Suzhou involved, after a long wait, getting on a motor boat that sailed approx 200 yards then returned. It was a rip off. Walk the city instead
5. The Peking Duck dinner was not an authentic dinner and was poorly executed. The restaurant was located on the 2nd floor of a mall. Cooked and prepared for large touring groups.
6. Daily Itinerary changes. The changes caused several schedule issues.
7. Large groups. Our tour had over 100 people. We were broken up into 3 smaller groups for touring but regrouped for meals..lots of waiting!
8. One tour guide kept us so long in the basement of cheap souvenir shop (commissions) that we boarded the Shanghai boat tour last resulting in poor viewing spots.
9. The dumplings at the Dumpling Dinner and Show were horrible. Mass produced for foreigners.
10. Did not get to see the Shanghai Museum because of poor planning.
If someone asked for my recommendation I would recommend spend a little more $ and go with a non commission based tour that had smaller groups.
We could have seen and experienced much more but what we saw and experienced resulted in an awesome life time adventure.
