Recently, I had quite the experience at Nita's that left me amused, and fearing for my life.
I walked in, happy to see that there didn't seem to be much of a wait. An aged woman smiled at me, so I smiled back. She asked if I needed a cut, and of course, that's what I came for! She said that she had 10 minutes, and she'll take me in. I was a bit surprised by this quick estimation of a cut time, and this should have alarmed me away.
I sat down, and we had the usual beginning chatter, what would you like, et cetera. Things started to get unusual when this lady began cutting my hair. She was being oddly rough, driving the clip into my skull, scratching at each curve. Her movements were jerky, but I initially dismissed it because I assumed she was in a rush for her appointment. She made occasional glimpses at the door, and kept on cutting.
When she was cutting the hair at the base of my neck, she started banging on it with her palm's edge. Imagine that! She positioned the razor, sharply scraped it upwards, and slammed the palm down to readjust. This roughness is not exaggerated. It's the same force you make when you pound your first at the bar for another glass of beer. She must've pounded my neck 9-10 times on this part. At this point I was amused. I wondered if she had a rough lifestyle, or if she has certain interests post work that makes her rough and borderline abusive in her haircuts. But this wasn't the end.
In coming to my left side, the side furthest away from her station, she had to pull on her cord. It was entangled with several other cords, and made for a very clear fire and electrical hazard. Each time she lifted the cord up, it slapped against the right side of my body, like a seatbelt. The wire stretched from the outlet, ran through several tangled loops on the ground, hugged my right side, and cradled my neck the entire time. Each time she pulled on the razor, the cord rubbed against my neck, and raised the entanglement at least 3 inches off of the ground. I gasped when I saw this, and prayed there was some conductivity to the garment that covered me. I smiled under my breath, not because I am masochistic, but because I realized I had lived a short but fulfilling life. If I died here, I would be happy with what I've done and accomplished. But then I grimaced when she began pounding on the base of my neck again.
At this point, I've had some emotional rollercoasters, and had my life flash before my eyes. She was finishing up with the razor and moved to razor and a comb combination technique. This was surprising to me, because she found a way to abuse me with this too! She made grandiose movements with her hands, and with each press of the razor against the comb, she kind of flicked the comb onto my head/cheek. In short, I was being slapped with the comb. I chuckled again. I wonder if you opened up a salon that advertised sadism from their stylists, if it would be a success.
Honestly, her technique was subpar. She rushed to complete my haircut, and failed to edge me up. She was negligent in safety, and endangered my life, and potential other clients, and was unusually rough in cutting hair. I don't believe she learned cutting hair a conventional way (maybe she bought hours and has a bought license-it's typical trust me, or maybe she learned by watching, a sort of apprenticeship and just ran with it) but she was clearly there to make money. She didn't engage me in conversation, and sought to make a quick buck in 10 minutes. I won't be going to her again, but maybe I'll request to have Nita cut my hair. I hear she's great.
If you go to Nita's, avoid the serious browed, plump, aged lady if you value your life. On this day I left with my life intact, but my hairstyle was effectively killed for a solid month. It's hair so it will grow back. But that neck pounding? I'll be traumatised for the rest of my life.
