Just joined this group a month ago (Jan 2015) and I'm very happy I did. I am by all accounts a beginner, so it's a scary thing wanting to learn how to defend yourself while standing alongside real trained fighters. Members from small to large, male to female, beginner to advanced have been extremely welcoming to me though. It's very obvious that the atmosphere is about empowering people, and making this feel like a safe space to enhance your personal level, whatever it may be, in martial arts. Thanks everyone for welcoming me in! :)

I went to this school with the hopes of continuing my training after moving the here from the east side of the state. Unfortunately this school was the very worst possible experience for me. At no point was there any discussion about what the enrollment process was, nor was there any discussion about how much the membership would be. I eventually realized that these guys are completely unprofessional and ended up asking for information I needed. They weren't using It wasn't a "soft sell" approach, they used a "no sale" approach! The instructors, with the exception of someone called "coach", made it abundantly clear that new students were not welcomed because of their unfriendly, aloof and self-important attitudes. I was not expecting the Red Carpet treatment by anyone but I would have at least liked to have been treated like a potential paying customer. Nearly 95% of all martial arts schools go out of business and this one will soon join those ranks. If you are looking for a martial arts school as an adult DO NOT waste your time with this school, it will only leave you feeling let down and disappointed.

To start, I moved to Michigan from Arizona literally this past February. When I was in AZ, I was practicing BJJ as frequently as possible. Well since my move, I was scouring KZoo for a replacement gym that was not only close, but a good school. I had checked out a few other gyms in the area, but they didn't have that family factor I was looking for. Finally I stumbled upon Lightning Kicks. I decided to try it out and found that I finally found what I was looking for; a gym that provides good instruction, a sense of belonging, and overall a pleasant experience. Not only does this gym cater to your MMA needs, it caters to Veterans every Saturday at 9am with their Operation Resilient Centurion, which is awesome for any veteran or currently serving service member (like myself) to come blow off steam and hang out with other veterans. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this gym. And Tristan? Scorpion would beat Batman any day of the week.

Trained here for 3 years and wish I could to this day. After leaving Lightning Kicks due to work and having to try other gyms around my area, I definitely would say Lightning Kicks gives new and veteran martial artist an unmatched experience. If you stay there long enough and put in the work, there is no way that you will not have success in the sport. LK has a strong family atmosphere, very welcoming to new people, skilled staff, affordable rates and a clean facility. If decide to join be prepared to train hard; this is not a gym for slackers and those who aren't committed to better themselves and others.

My daughters, their friends, and I took a self-defense course at Lightning Kicks and it was a great experience. Amir was an excellent teacher and made the girls feel comfortable while effectively communicating the seriousness of the skills we were learning. Several other instructors watched and helped us to learn the techniques as we were practicing with partners. I feel that the training was invaluable, especially for young women, and would give the background to not panic if an unfortunate situation were to happen.
