Excellent, no-frills Brazilian jiu- jitsu instruction. My son has been training here 4+ years. Joe Guido is a great instructor.

AKA: Zee. Great place to train. Real self defense based upon "traditional" and effective Gracie Jiu jitsu. Even with on and off knee problems,it is the only place I would go despite a 1 hour drive each way. It's a shame that Jiu Jitsu has evolved in a different direction..but not at GraciePhila. Not many schools like this around anymore! Just wish I could train more often. Zee

What an awesome school! I wish I had found this place 5 years ago when I first started to learn Jiu Jitsu. The classes are 2 hours long and the whole 2 hours are spent learning Gracie Jiu Jitsu. If you go to other schools, the length of there classes are 1 to 1.5 hours and the first 30 minutes are wasted doing jumping jacks and sit ups......no thank you, I want to learn jiu jitsu and already have a gym membership. Joe (school owner and instructor) watches out for your personal welfare as well. As a white belt you wont be thrown into the deep end of pool and told to swim when it's time for open mat (the time when you wrestle and try to choke someone or hyper-extend a limb). Joe will teach you a basic foundation of Jiu Jitsu and when he feels you're ready, then you can go wrestle with everyone else during open mat. Unfortunately at every other school you will be fed to the wolves. You won't know a damn thing; you'll get injured by other white belts who dont know damn thing; the higher belts will mock you and use you like a tool/practice dummy; and you will get so frustrated that you will end up quitting. I have personally seen this happen as well as personally experienced it Another great thing about this school is that if you are new to Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Joe will tailor each class to your level. He teaches the class so that no one feels left out or lost. Unfortunately, other schools do the opposite and teach the flavor of the month moves (the moves that are most popular in the jiu jitsu scene) to appeal to their higher level belts to keep them satisfied and paying their monthly dues. The result is half the class (your newer members) end up getting lost with a glazed look over their face. One last thing is that Joe runs a tight ship. If he notices someone being careless or unsafe, he lets them know immediately in front of the whole class. Speaking with Joe, he's told me that he has kicked people out of his school for being too aggressive. At other schools, aggressive, reckless people get promoted. Again, I know because I've seen it and experienced it. If you want to learn Gracie Jiu Jitsu in a safe, clean environment with a dedicated hands on instructor (who has learned jiu jitsu directly from the Gracies), then GraciePhila is the place for you. If not, then there are numerous other schools who are more than happy to take your money.
