Soyokaze Dojo teaches the traditional martial arts of Ninpo (Ninjutsu) and Japanese Jujutsu. These arts have been passed down for nearly 2,000 years with the purpose of defending the body and spirit as efficiently as possible. There are no tournaments and no trophies. We do not participate in tournaments because we do not train to attack and because our techniques are designed to end the conflict in a single move. A traditional martial arts requires more investment from the student, but gives so much more in return. I have been in the class for 4 months and am already noticing improvement in fitness and flexibility, but more importantly in my purpose and balance. Highly recommended to those looking for a serious and meaningful martial arts experience.

Solid Martial Arts. I researched a lot of martial art studios in the Madison area. I choose Soyokaze because of the mix of traditional Ninpo and Japanese Jujitsu. Sensei reminds us that there is an academic element to the class, and that the students are expected know more than just how to execute a technique. I think there is also a mental/spiritual element as well. It's a holistic martial arts experience.

I didn't know one martial art from another when I first started. I was very lucky to find this one. It's a new school; even the highest-ranked students aren't that high yet. The sensei, on the other hand, is very good. If you stick with it, you can become as skilled as you want to be.

There are many paths to the mountain top as there are many paths that lead nowhere or worse yet, off cliffs. This school is well rooted with a great heritage and won't lead you wrong. While the students may not understand how rare this school really is, I am very glad to be able to be a part of it. This particular dojo has a wonderful friendly atmosphere with a subtle level of seriousness while also allowing one to concentrate and learn. It is comfortable to practice for both men and women! While it isn't for small children there are some young adults who enjoy this school very much. The instructor goes above and beyond what other instructors I have had in the past to help the students learn. It is easy access to as it is right off the belt line in the Sauk Point Square between the library and Asia Express. I highly encourage people to at least come in and visit and get the feel & see for themselves. Not all styles are for all individuals, but the best way to learn what works for you is from experience.

If you just want to punch, kick, and wrestle around, go somewhere else. Soyokaze Dojo teaches traditional martial arts, keeping true to ancient traditions. The knowledge in this school is very powerful, and still very practical in today's world, but you must earn your way through the curriculum of knowledge. Traditional martial arts is hard training, and it isn't about short-term gratification. You need determination, patience, humility, and a great compassion for life before you can be trusted with knowledge that can very easily harm/maim/kill other human beings.I have trained in several traditional martial arts, and Genbukan is one of the strongest roots of knowledge available in the US today. It is a very unique experience to train with a teacher who is the direct student of a grandmaster of an ancient lineage of budo.
