We love St Mary of The Angels School! The teachers and staff are really nice. The teachers are very dedicated to their students. They have a wonderful and nurturing Pre-K program. They also have before and aftercare. I love that they have incorporated STEM at SMA. My daughter looks forward to seeing Ms. Baatile (Science teacher). Children love STEM. The parents are very involved in the school. For example, book fairs, fund raising, and all the other activities. The only way for our school and community to be successful is to become involved. Everyone knows each other there. The majority of the children that attend SMA have been together since Pre-K. Children receive the academics education as well as the spiritual. We love being at SMA! They are our second family!

Contrary to what the “school official” states in his opening diatribe on Great Schools, there is not just one disgruntled parent, there are many disgruntled parents, many who have left the school, and many who have stayed but are prevented from voicing their views for fear of having their children expelled because of the totalitarian Maryland Charter that every family is forced to sign at the beginning of the school year. If this is not enough to distract you from ever considering this school, then also consider the following: 1) THE INNOCENT WILL CONTINUE TO SUFFER: The Maryland Charter prevents disruptive students and bullying being dealt with in an appropriate manner. The emphasis is on endlessly "working" with the problem students to no end. 2) DIFFERENTIATION OF MISEDUCATION: The Maryland Charter also states that your bright child will spend their extra time helping the lagging students to catch up, when this is really the job of the teacher. Any accomplished education professional will say that this “idea” is crazy! In addition, your bright child will not get any enrichment activities that allow them to jump ahead once they have mastered a topic. 3) FREE STUFF FOR EVERYONE: In their misguided notion of how to run a successful school, the administration has chosen to hand out scholarships in such a manner that these students represent a disproportionate percentage of the total student population. These students tend to be lagging academically and are more likely to cause trouble in school. In other words, the students who perform well and do not cause trouble continue to suffer. P.S. The school is also not financially sound because of all the scholarship students and is in a continuous fund raising mode for everything. All the above should cause you to look elsewhere for a school for your child.

St. Mary's is making big changes for the upcoming school year. They have a new administration, new programs and a re-commitment to better academics. When I met with the new principal and several of the returning parents, I discovered how well so many of their children have done. Their children who graduated are now at prep schools around the city. All of them so polite and cheerful - they talked about how much they enjoyed St. Mary's and their priests and teachers - it really made an impression on me and my husband. The new principal seemed genuinely concerned about my concerns. She made it an easy choice for me.
