My husband gave me a lovely diamond pendant for Christmas 2017 (not from this jeweller), I was thrilled as was he with my reaction. I was concerned that the original chain would not be sufficiently strong and that I could lose the pendant. I went into Stephens jewellery store in February 2018 to purchase a more substantial chain. The chain I purchased was a “rope” style chain, I was assured it would do the job I required it to. In late June early July 2018 the chain broke, luckily I was sitting at the time and was able to retrieve both chain and pendant. I took the bill and broken chain with the pendant into Stephens who told me the chain was defective as it had frayed. They were kind enough to replace it. The owner looked at the new chain under a jewellers device and assured me this would not occur again. Two days later the same exact thing occurred , I returned to Stephens yet again and was told the chain was defective, same issue. I am not stupid but I am trusting. I waited approximately a month before a new chain came in, within a week it was missing from my neck, not so lucky this time, it was gone. When asked if the company who made these chains would take any responsibility he replied “no but we have a 50% sale on now”. When asked if under the circumstances he could at least offer a credit for the defective chain “no but we have a 50% sale on now”. I like to treat people as I hope to be treated, not at this establishment, I am so upset . Buyer beware. He will not take any responsibility for the defective merchandise he sells and that’s bad business. Very sad lesson learned the hard way, trust has to be earned. I won’t be so trusting again.

Dropped off two pieces of jewelry for appraisal. Was advised that it would take two weeks to complete. Called them after 3 weeks and was advised that it would take at least another week, since the pieces didn't have a carat stamp and had to be taken elsewhere for testing. (the pieces are about 150 years old). The man I spoke with was rude, instead of apologetic. He suggested the pieces weren't even gold, since they only had a craft man stamp. Even if the pieces were worthless, I should have been advised of their inability to appraise in advance, not after 3 weeks had already passed and I had heard nothing form them. Some personal advice to the owner - If you're running a jewelry store, you should probably be aware that old pieces are sometimes not stamped, but are still made of gold and could be highly valuable.
