I bought a Cartier Santos Demoiselle for my day to day watch in 2007. Thus it is less than 10 years old. It is working perfectly. I need the battery replacing but because of its 'age', Cartier will not replace the battery without a full service, including replacement of the sapphire which fell off the crown. They want $555 for this service. If I get the battery replaced by anyone other than Cartier (including an authorized dealer) they won't guarantee its water resistance. I have the following remarks: 1. I do not appreciate being held hostage by Cartier for a service, when I only want a new battery. Being held hostage is effectively the case, if Cartier insists this is the only way they will guarantee continued water resistance. Cartier, or an authorized dealer should be able to replace the battery without requiring a full service, and without compromising its structural integrity - the ability to resist water. 2. The sapphire was, basically, glued on to the crown. This is not acceptable for a watch costing thousands of dollars. Cartier is renowned for its craftsmanship and watch making skills, which is why I bought the watch in the first place. They are meant to last decades, and be handed down to subsequent generations. I find it incredible that such a watch requires more attention to keep it going than cheaper watch brands, which I, my father and my mother have owned for longer and which still work beautifully - without bits falling off (like sapphires). It does not speak well to Cartier's quality or longevity, but I suspect this is really a swizz . $555 to change a battery and check out a watch that's working perfectly is ridiculous.

Don't buy a Cartier watch. The batteries are a complete rip off. They only last 12 - 18 months, if you are lucky, take 4 weeks to get replaced and cost a fortune. Seriously?? How hard is it to change a battery and how much do they need to gouge their customers to install a $5.00 Energizer watch battery anyone can purchase at the drug store.

I have been to this store many times over the years (old location and new location). They size you up by what you are wearing and have a bad attitude. Nothing like being discriminated based on how you look or what you are wearing. Where did you get that watch, they asked…I bought it! If I ever buy another Cartier item it will be on line from another state to avoid dealing with the people at Cartier in Chevy Chase, MD and no sales tax!
