When first arriving at my senior year banquet at Benedicts I was very excited to celebrate the occasion. This was my last event I would attend as being a 4-year member of the team. I had put in so much time and energy and could not wait to celebrate all our successes. And to as you will learn, it was just hosted terribly by Benedicts Plantation. I struggled to use “terrible” out of complete respect for the sponsors and parents that did the real work to put on the event. I loved all the awards, speeches, the slideshow etc. But Benedicts frankly could not have been much worst.
We had only 90 people at the event yet some had to park at the neighboring businesses. The event space was beautifully decorated by our wonderful parents and sponsors. Once everyone found their seats I was getting thirsty and noticed a drink station. When I got up everyone followed. I felt like they should have better directed us. (But in fact, they never directed us in any way the entire night) The two options were unsweet tea and water. Personally, I found it tricky to get my drink due to the glasses being only on one side of the beverages. There were several dirty glasses so you had to pick to find a clean one. Next, we got our food and the menu was caesar salad with croutons, pasta with alfredo sauce, breadsticks, and chicken. With 90 people attending our event the line moved well which was good. We could portion our own salad, pasta, and breadsticks, but the chicken was served to us by an older gentleman. Each person was only given 2 small slices of chicken breast that frankly had no taste(I would say 4 ounces or less). They were also very dry almost like it was reheated. It was not at all what I expected since we live in southern Louisiana, which is known for its impeccable flavorful food. The salad was soggy, and it seemed as if the dressing had been on it and sitting in the bowl for hours. The pasta sauce was completely bland and had a chunky consistency to it . The breadsticks were great (store bought but again very good), but they did not serve or offer butter which was odd. The food was served at room temperature other than the chicken (in a pan thing) although it was also kind of cold. Oh, and the worst part was while we were being served the door to an outside storage area was open 3 feet behind the man serving the chicken. Not the most elegant view.
After we ate our coaches did speeches, awards, and the picture slideshow. While all of this was happening, the workers were picking up our plates which led to distractions. They walked in front of us and we had to hand them our plates. The parents brought cake and cookies which the workers cut our cake on the table. At the end, people were eating the cake and taking pictures. The workers walked around and picked up plates on a cart, dumping the silverware and leftover drinks in a big container (yes while we were taking pictures and having cake, very disappointing). This was unusual to see because most venues wait to do that in the kitchen away from the guest sight. I was also surprised to see that they only had two staff members working , due to the number of guests they had attending the event.
In conclusion, I had high hopes for this event and I had a great time, because of all the love received by my sponsor's teammates, family, and friends, at the same time I was embarrassed for Benedicts by their terrible service. I took the time to do this review to hopefully prevent future groups from being subjected to this low-level service. My previous 3 years banquets were at other places nearby and were 100% better.
