We just got back from a week onboard the Da Capo and can't speak highly enough about the boat (immaculate, clearly so well maintained, and with a very detailed equipment inventory - you only need to bring food and a few clothes, and something to sip on in the evenings!). As for CYC - their marina and facilities are probably the best there is and the staff were all extremely helpful and cordial - made us feel very welcome - and I have no doubt we'll go back for more. I've read negative comments in the reviews about Ken and yes he's quirky, but he's obviously very experienced and clearly runs a tight ship there, he jumped on every little issue we came up with, and personally we found him likeable and accommodating. As for the place, North Channel is truly stunning with endless nooks and cranny places as well as plenty of open water - but you do need to have your wits about you in terms of safe navigation. All told, we all loved the experience and thought it was great value.

Beautiful area to charter in, good marina facilities, friendly staff, and a well-supplied store. The guy running the place though, well, that's another issue. Doesn't seem interested in doing more than chastising clients and staff, and if you ask him a question about the boat you rent, be prepared to receive either a curt or demeaning response. I personally would never let him charter my boat because he wasn't very familiar with the one we took out--he wasn't able to answer some important questions about it (see curt/demeaning response comment above). Can't wait until someone with more of a customer-focus starts running the place. The current guy seems to have completely lost interest in the business. Time for some competition in Gore Bay...

this is a nice clean place and a safe place to jeep your boat

My experience was similar to Mr. Edwards. The sailing weather and destinations were fine, but our boat had multiple mechanical problems that were aggravated by the CYC (Ken). The whole story is too long for this review. The problems were: 1) loud, vibrating engine due to broken motor mount, 2) battery wouldn't charge under motor, then two days later the first time we connected shore power the charging circuit melted, filling the cabin with smoke and left us with an uncertain safety condition and only a depleted battery for power, necessitating the next day that we go to the only repair station, Little Current; 3) motor overheated on way to Little Current; impeller had been replaced just before our cruise but without back-flushing the broken parts out of the line. 4) two hatches leaked while at the dock the 1st day; CYC tried to repair one (unsuccesfully, it turned out), but we had to just duct tape the other shut. As each problem arose we notified CYC, but got only disappointing responses, mostly telling us everything was fine. In several charters over twenty years I have never encountered a charter company like this. Not recommended.

We recently spent a week on their PDQ 36 "Mehitabel" and enjoyed the boat and the area very much. Every boat I've ever owned or rented has had it's quirks and maintenance issues. They come with the territory. Not to belittle issues experienced by others, but I can say I've never rented a boat that was as well maintained or equipped as this one was. We also hired a captain through CYC as we had never sailed in this area and my health had taken an unexpected detour. Capt. Jeff was very knowledgeable of the area and a very competent sailor. I've never hired a captain before and was a bit worried it would be a bad fit but I was pleasantly surprised. The only constructive criticism I have for CYC is they need to appoint someone (else) to handle their pre-charter communications. Ken simply doesn't have the soft skills to deal with people effectively. We had no issue with him while we were there but, before our charter, it was impossible to get more than 2 words out of him on the phone or even get an email answered. It's not like we badgered them incessantly; we had some basic questions that needed answered and we never did get them from him. Overall, our experience while we were there was excellent. Their staff were courteous, professional and efficient. Improving pre-charter communications, especially for first time customers who don't know what to expect, would have made for much less concern and a perfect rating. I hope we're welcome to return because I'd love to sail this area again and would charter a boat from CYC again without hesitation.
