As many fond memories as I have of eating in this very restaurant growing up I must say as an adult Shoney's as a chain has not changed much. In some ways that is good. In some ways bad. I would love to see them offer better quality ingredients with gluten free options. But it is a Southern staple and sometimes (every once in a blue moon) especially amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season I find myself resorting back to it but predominantly for the breakfast and salad bars. Good place to sit and chat over coffee... and no it's not gourmet.... but it is simple, small town comfort. For out-of- towners it is conveniently next door to a locally owned hotel, Springfield Inn, as well so walking is a breeze.

In my opinion Shoney's in general has gone downhill. It's always freezing cold at the Springfield location. Their steaks are mostly fat and they have eliminated a lot of what I used to love on their salad bar. They had no baked potatoes to go with the steak, only mashed potatoes from the hot bar. I was extremely disappointed in the food and wasn't greatly impressed with the service. I have no intentions of ever going back.
