Colonial Williamsburg sports many taverns and cuisines. Based on time and menu, we chose Shields. After about a 15 minute wait, we were shown our table. Our server wanted to take our order quickly as the place was very busy. There were several children groups that were also dining there. Food was pricey. Burger needed seasoning. The mixed platter said "glazed chicken" and 3 little wings showed up on the plate. Just not at all what was expected. The bill was pricey, but we could charge it to the room so that was easy...except trying to get a copy of our receipt! Bathrooms are downstairs and heaven help you if a children's group is there at the same time. There is a handicap bathroom on the first floor. We've eaten in historic taverns in the past and this experience definitely pales in comparison with their feed 'em and street 'em business practice.

I went here on a group trip to dc, and the waitresses were rude and snotty. I will give them the fact that there were about 100 kids at the establishment, but that does not give them to audacity to bark at us for the simple fact of asking for water after they had "already done that". The service was good but i will my be coming back here and will not recommend it. They do have a nice atmosphere though.

When you book a place like Shields Tavern, you need to realize that you're going to pay a premium price for non-premium food. Not to say the food is bad, but except for a few special things, it's not remarkable. What you're paying for here is the experience of eating in a place that seems be be 250 years in the past with candlelight as your only source of illumination (be sure to bring your phone for it's flashlight to read the menu). Accept that and you'll be happy. Get picky about the "value" of the food/service vs. what you could get elsewhere and you won't. That being said, the experience is quite good. There's the occasional entertainment - on our night, there was a gentleman with a mandolin wandering about and a lady who sang a capella, both were quite good. The food was of reasonable quality and the service was quite good. I went with the chicken and my wife had the fish and both were OK - again, you're not really here for the food, but the experience. One nice thing about this particular restaurant is that if you're staying at one of the Williamsburg hotels (Lodge, Inn, etc.), the bus stops right out front, so you don't have to drive over and then fight for a parking spot in the fairly limited lot.

Watch out the chairs are really low to the ground. Otherwise it was good food, era music, and an overall great experience. Highly recommended...

Shepherds pie decent, but not very hot. Fish and chips good, but homemade potato chips could "chip" a tooth, hard as rocks and the coleslaw was in a tiny metal cup, about 2 or 3 ounces at most(kind of a rip off), anyway I guess it's called a tourist trap for a reason.
