Elite Team East Bay Jiu Jitsu
4820 Bissell Ave, Richmond, California, 94806, United States
Update: After training here with Adam for over a year now, I enthusiastically update my review. The location moved from the old 'wonky spartan' facility, to the current place, and its a great upgrade! Fantastic clean place with amazing mats. Seriously, the amount of padding is just perfect. Come check it out!
I moved to the bay area looking to continue my jiujitsu training and found elite team east bay as the most convenient location for me. After shopping around and dropping in at the other east bay bjj choices I found it to be the best fit as well and the price can't be beat! The location is a little wonky to find the first time and the facility spartan (perfectly functional and clean), but the small class sizes make it the hidden gem that it is. Tons of one on one time with the instructor if you want it! Adam is super accessible before, during, or after classes to answer any questions or go over anything you might need cleared up. Very welcoming and chill atmosphere--This is definitely not the 'hyper competitive alpha-male go until you puke with coaches yelling in your face' training environment. Super fun, amazing workout, huge confidence booster, great people. Constantly amazed that more people havnt picked up jiujitsu!

I've been working out with Matt for the past couple years. He's a top notch martial artist, fully of martial and spiritual wisdom, and he's just an all around great dude. He's fun to learn with and I've never been injured (that's a first for me in any gym over the course of 2 years). What I love about Matt is the number of ways he can break things down, e.g. yogic perspective, the martial art aspects, and even tactical/military applications. The Open Matt is a happy place, an oasis for me. I highly recommend Matt Lucas for martial arts, body work, personal fitness, and fun self-improvement. He's also a great guitarist, so check him out live around town. Oh, and his playlists while working out are killer. He plays Mississippi Blues to 80s to new bands I've never heard of. This is an all around awesome Oakland business that enriches our community.

The Japanese Art & Cultural Center is one of the cornerstones of Japanese culture in the South Bay. It is rich with history and has had thousands of Japanese and other members of the community walk though its doors or grace it’s tatami mats all in appreciation and admiration of the Japanese arts it celebrates. The center offers a large variety of arts from martial arts like karate, kendo, kyudo, iaido, and aikido, to traditional arts like flower arrangement, calligraphy, and paining. It even offers dance and Zumba taught by wonderful teachers. The center is one of the treasures of the South Bay.

My 12 year old has been taking classes at Soja for about two years and he has really blossomed! We had struggled to find a sport or other physical activity for him, but this has been a great fit. He enjoys the exercise and has gained a lot of confidence over his abilities both in Kung Fu and just in general. Peter focuses not just on the kid's technical abilities in Kung Fu, but also on how what they practice and learn in martial arts can be extended to the rest of their lives. Jacob is also an excellent teacher and has also provided excellent instruction and guidance. You are getting much more than a Kung Fu class when you enroll your child at Soja.

This a a great place to work out!! First of all, I am in the Strength and Training class from 8 to 9am with Mark, and I have to say this type of work out gets you fit in less than a week. No Joke! I have only gone for 2 weeks and already feel in better in shape. I actually vomited the first 2 times because the work outs are serious and demanding.
I will like to thank the trainer Mark, he is really patient and actually dedicates his time to showing us how to do the work out correctly.
If you want to get in serious shape this is a great place to do so, right now I can only stand 3 days a week, but soon I will make it out to all 5 days when my muscles stop aching so much. :)
Thanks a lot guys. Appreciate the great work outs.
Studio 12

Studio 12 rocks. After seeing an aerial dance performance the Mission several months ago, I had to try flying for myself. Cherie Carson and her crew of aerial dance instructors are all very knowledgeable, patient, and adventurous in their teaching styles. Lots of classes offered throughout the week for adults and children. Two thumbs way up for Studio 12 flys :-)
