Xavier College Preparatory

Xavier College Preparatory

4710 N 5th St, Phoenix, Arizona, 85012, United States
The school DOESN'T value academics nearly as much as it values socializing and athletics. It pales in comparison to east coast prep schools, and lacks rigor in the curriculum. Most people who enjoy the school discuss the "fun times" or "experiences"; leisure is vital for any secondary school student, but leisure can't help you pass the SAT. Just TAKE A LOOK AT THE AVERAGE ACT / SAT scores which aren't too much higher than state averages - unimpressive considering the affluence of the student body and the presumptive ability to afford pricey test prep. The teachers are sometimes unqualified to teach in their respective fields (particularly in STEM), but as a parochial school, Xavier doesn't have to follow standard hiring credentials. Software programming isn't offered. Extra-curricular organizations are subpar and do little to promote civic leadership. The courses do little to engage students with the outside world or current affairs. Even Economics / Goverment is disregarded, and course credit is granted simply by completing a take-home multiple choice exam. Critical thinking is discouraged in favor of busy-work and memorization. Students who are academically minded don't receive enough support or encouragement from faculty and staff. The Great Books program is well-meaning, but lacks the structure or wherewithal to truly stimulate active learning. In this increasingly globally competitive world, a lackluster education will no longer be rewarded. Xavier's young women need to be more forcefully pushed to rise to the same level of competition as their counterparts in China. There is just too much focus on non-academic pursuits and popularity contests. Unfortunately, issues like racism and discrimination (including non-racial forms to non-minority students) are also problems among certain teachers (especially those belonging to religious orders, aka nuns). You might find yourself mistreated if the school administrators incorrectly presume your background, until they realize who your parents are. If a teacher "just doesn't like you" it can make student life extremely difficult. There is definitely widespread drug use, drinking, partying, misbehavior and rule-breaking etc. Despite the religious curriculum, the girls here are no better in behavior or ethics than those in your standard high school. They're just better at not getting caught / evading punishment. The all-girl environment can also become very "catty" and cantankerous but I suppose you could find that at any high school. In full disclosure, there is a very predominant quasi "Laguna Beach" or "The Hills", hedonistic, vain, melodramatic, disinterested, and egocentric vibe, which is unfortunately promoted and perpetuated by the school itself. Just be aware that there is not much diversity in interests or personalities, which can be challenging over the course of 4 years. Xavier is ABSOLUTELY NOT a "college prep" in the same strain as the Phillips Academy. Xavier is a school where affluent and mildly affluent Phoenicians send their children to maintain a public image of affluence. Tears, popularity, and brown-nosing could garner passing grades. Parents and students are largely unconcerned with superior academic achievement - Xavier has a local reputation of lagging far behind Brophy in this respect. This culture can be distracting and disheartening for sincerely hardworking students. Consider other day schools in the Phoenix area. If you think attending Xavier inherently provides an competitive advantage in college admissions, you are very mistaken. The overwhelming majority of graduates (unsurprisingly) attend ASU or Arizona. The college advising is surprisingly quite minimal - you will have to do all of your own research. The few students who make it into top schools are often "connected" by way of familial legacy attendance, wealth, or athletic recruitment. I've seen several public schools in Scottsdale, Chandler, etc. send far more students annually to top schools. Just do your due diligence before choosing XCP.

The ACES is a terrific organization where the needs and safety of the students are top priority. The supportive administration ensures that the success of the students is truly a team effort (staff, student, family, school district, community). It's a privilege to work with the wonderfully creative staff that do a terrific job motivating the students while creating engaging educational environments where the individual needs of the students are being addressed. The ACES is top notch / first class and it starts at the top.

We have two special needs children that are both diagnosed with Autism. While our kids are a bit more challenging they are good kids overall. Sadly we had bounced around as other preschools just didn't want to put in the effort and/or didn't have a staff that was willing to learn to work with them. As a parent it is hard to have your kids rejected...especially when you know they are good kids. When we moved to Scottsdale last year the only daycare in our area that was willing to give the twins a shot was Goddard. We met with the owner (Natalia) and loved her approach. Her philosophy is to have the kids reading, writing and having a solid Kindergarten curriculum base even before they arrive in Kindergarten. And, when we brought up that our kids were Autistic, we didn't hear excuses. Natalia just said we'd figure out a way to work with them and didn't seem concerned. It was a huge relief. Over the year that our kids attended Goddard they grew in so many ways, and Goddard is undoubtedly responsible for a large part of their progress. Goddard's director (Becky) took an active role in making sure the twins were in classes that were appropriate for their age level. As time went on, they challenged our kids by progressing them up in classes and involving them with their typically developing peers. They worked with their therapists and learned from them how to better work with kids with special needs. They were dedicated to our kids, and for that we are forever grateful. Whether you have kids with special needs or typically developing children and live in the Scottsdale area, you will find no better preschool than Goddard. We have older typically developing kids and only wish we knew of Goddard when they were younger. You honestly couldn't ask for a better preschool.

In answer to the google reviewer about the school not being an accredited school. That is incorrect. My siblings and I all went to this school and none of ever had to get a GED. Our diplomas were all accepted. My brother went on to join the military and was in for 26 years. I have been in the business world for 40 years and my diploma has always been accepted. Be sure to do your research correctly before making judgments. I would like to say, however, I would have rather have gone to the public school as we did not have any kind of scholarship programs and any of the extra curricular activates that I would have liked to have been involved in.

Absolutely the worst display of sportsmanship in I have ever seen in a sports leader. Overzealous behavior on court and with her team after game. The way she spoke to her girls was shameful. My children did not play against this coach at a game but I watched her rip another coach and then brag about it to her team she coached and that we are better than them. I was so glad my daughter did not have to play against her in the tournament. As a dad, my girls have it hard enough proving to boys they are good in sports the last thing they need is a female leader like that to look up to. Absolute disgust

I love this school for my child. They have amazing teachers that will work with your child and free tutoring if your child falls behind. They teach advanced curriculum and my child loves it here. They have morning and afternoon recess and include art, Spanish, music, gym, and computers in their program. I couldn't ask for a better school or teachers. The ladies in the office aren't always on point, that is my only complaint. They sometimes treat you like you are taking up their time, I would like that to change.

AWESOME SCHOOL!!!! Whether your Catholic or not....it is a WONDERFUL, WELCOMING, COMFORTABLE, FAMILY ORIENTED place for your children to be. We are a family of multiples and our children have THRIVED here. We feel EXTREMELY comfortable here as parents. IF FINANCES ARE AN ISSUE....DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU FROM STOPPING BY AND MEETING WITH THE STAFF....there are A LOT of organizations out there that will help you pay for most (if not ALL) of the tuition....JUST ASK THE STAFF about this and they will give you the information needed.
