Halcyon JiuJitsu
Spring, Texas, 77388, United States
My wife and I have been bringing our 9yr old son to Halcyon Jiu Jitsu for 1 ½ years now. Taking him to Halcyon has defiantly been one of the best investments we have ever made for our son. All of the coaches are on the same page, and are extremely supportive in the development of each and every child. Coach Matt Smith, Coach Nate, Coach Omar, Coach Andrew, Coach Jeremiah, and Coach Morrison are all top notch and make everyone feel welcome. I’ve seen each instructor spend extra time helping the children improve on their weaknesses and overcoming obstacles. The kids also learn valuable life lessons such as respect, discipline, confidence, self-defense, and overall well-being. I think it helps when your children hear the same principles you teach at home being reinforced by the instructors. What about the jujitsu? I’ve seen my son go from a total beginner, to now all the basic moves have become instinctive. Using the guard, mount, side control, take-downs, arm bars, sweeps, triangles, kickboxing technique, and the ever so popular “backpack of doom” are all regularly drilled here. My wife and I are impressed with how much our son has improved over the past year and a half thanks to Halcyon Jiu Jitsu.

Coach Lonnie Vickery is a darn good coach! I've trained at a lot of different gyms over the past 17 years, and he's is one of my favorites! I trained here for 1 month, but had to stop due to distance traveled everyday and personal financial constraints so this is a 100% unbiased review...
Staff: These guys are so nice, humble, personable, knowledgeable, and just down to earth. They really do take the time to teach you the proper technique and you can tell they really love what they do.
Students: Everyone here was super nice, and I found no ego here.
Location: Conveniently located inside a gym, called Monstros Gym, so you can get your fit on when your not learning how to choke people!
Cost $$: These guys are the most affordable in the area, with NO CONTRACTS!!! The only reason I stopped coming was because I live 35-45 minutes away depending on toll roads, and I drive a BMW, so my gas and vehicle maintenance would be a killer if I trained here 5 days a week, BUT... their drop in fees are only $10 at the time of this review!!! So I will return!
I really loved training here and I really do miss it. If I move closer or win the lottery and can afford the gas I will train here twice a day!
Coach Lonnie is the best!
Cy-Fair Aikido Club
8440 Greenhouse Rd, Cypress, Texas, 77433, United States
I had been practicing at another Aikido Dojo in the area since 2013, but recently I had been searching for a more congenial Dojo with "better atmospherics, better culture", and I still prefer one close to home. I found Cy-Fair Aikido Center, and I'm going to give them a go. Sensei Matt Poulson, who comes through the AAA/AWA heritage (The Founder M. Ueshiba > Koichi Tohei > Fumio Toyoda > Andrew Sato > David Galdamez > Matt Poulson) has good coaching skills and has been helping me to understand how what I've learned over many years at a different school fits into the context of the AAA/AWA heritage. The larger organization that Cy-Fair Aikido Center belongs to aims to be inclusive of different styles; they have students from different places. My 1st degree brown belt was fully recognized on day one of practice. Even though they use temporary mats, they are good mats, you can do hard ukemi on them, no problem, and they have a big area to work with.
For those who don't know, Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by The Founder Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs. Aikido is often translated as "the Way of unifying (with) life energy" or as "the Way of harmonious spirit." Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.
Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical strength, as the aikidōka (aikido practitioner) "leads" the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks.
Aikido derives mainly from the martial art of Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, (a form of Jiu Jitsu) but began to diverge from it in the late 1920s.
