Really lovely community and campus. We've been there since 2005, and both my kids have benefited greatly from its programs.

St. Mary's is an amazing school with proven top notch academics rivaling any school in Orange County. Our children are thriving in the IB environment and tuition although not cheap, is a great value when compared to similar high performing schools in the area.

We just started at FWS, with a son in kindergarten and a daughter in the third grade. While we understood that it was a co-op, I don't think my husband and I realized how much work would be involved. But all the hard work is so worth it, with the payoff being incredibly happy and engaged kids.
Our ultra academically-inclined daughter found herself bored in her previous LAUSD school, which serviced thousands of kids. Still, we were worried that the size of FWS (with about 50 students total, across four classrooms) would be a huge culture shock for her. As it turns out, she loves the new environment, where bullying is non-existent thanks to the school's social-emotional curriculum that involves productive conflict resolution. And individualized, inquiry-based learning means she's never bored. She explores, creates and has fun doing it.
Our son is different - not as precocious as his sister. And, typical of a baby of the family, he can experience separation anxiety. Yet he's so happy at FWS, in a loving environment where he is encouraged and supported.
Both kids are more aware of the world around them, and are developing true compassion (which is hard to cultivate these days). I love the small class sizes, the creative focus (art, theater and music classes) and physical and outdoor learning (yoga, field trips, park days). And you know what? We as parents are finding that it's pretty awesome to work hard with like-minded (and, dare I say it, cool) parents toward the common goal of creating this incredible learning environment for our kids.
In case you couldn't tell, we couldn't be happier so far.

It seems to be a normal "private school" now but in the 1990s it was a group home of sorts for troubled kids. I spent a couple years there and the staff were very abusive. Being "restrained" or as we called it "getting slammed" is only supposed to happen if a child is a physical threat to themselves or others, but it was used constantly as a solution to any and every little annoyance. If you don't do your school work you get slammed. If you are caught awake after lights out you get slammed. Being slammed consist of a an adult tackling a student to the floor where they press their knee against your back or chest until another staff member comes to assist them in dragging you to a small building called "crisis". crisis consist of a living room sized area with a fer tiny cubicles built along one wall. and a small room with floor to ceiling carpet and a magnetic door on the other. (there are at least one of these carpeted rooms with magnetic doors in every building.) when you arrive in crisis the staff hand you off to two more staff who slam you against the carpeted wall or floor where they twist your arm, put it behind your back and pull it toward your neck while pressing their weight against your back to constrict your breathing. They take turns doing this for several minutes. after what felt like hours of torture. the student is made to sit silently in the blank little cubicle for no less than one hour sometimes as much as 14 hours. if you speak or look away from the wall you get slammed again. these are not isolated incidents. this was standard practice for all staff in the event of any minor inconvenience. if this is still a place for troubled children do not send your kids there. it is like something from a horror movie.
