BASIS Independent Fremont

My experience, with Basis as my new school for my daughter, has been very positive. My daughter comes home bursting with new information and new things she wants to learn. She has created a set of very nice friends there, who share similar values as my family. Her love for learning is alive and well and I really have Basis to thank for bringing that back into my daughter's school life. It isn't about memorization and test scores, it is about stimulating children's minds and making them so eager to learn that the test scores are high but very secondary to the purpose of the education. I am glad we made the shift. A few standout things: 1) They are not just a zero tolerance on bullying in words, but in action. They have bully experts as part of their staff. 2) Their teachers teach from just the subject matter in which the teacher loves and is passionate about and has in depth knowledge about. Long gone are the days of asking one single teacher to teach all topics. I love the method of a subject matter expert teaching. Those teachers teach from the heart and soul about what they love. 3) The administration is easy to reach. There is no barrier to reach them. Call and see. It is really that easy. 4) The 2nd report card: The school does an academic report card and a social report card that looks at the student's whole being, not just academically. This helps identify things like stress factors, behavioral norms, and gives the parent(s) an opportunity to see the child's emotional well being too. Every school has things that aren't what you want exactly, Basis has those but they are all so minor like busing schedule that it seems petty to even mention them. I am so glad to be a member of the Basis community.

We have taken our little now for the full year and she loves it. We're enrolled for summer and fall 2016. Her teachers have been amazing.
One thing I would suggest is for better newsletters that really reiterate or remind us of important dates such as Last Day / First Day / Re-enrollment. Sometimes it can take a little while to open up the newsletter from a smart phone.
It's nice to see important dates in BOLD or CAPS letter in an email since that is the first thing I open up (before the newsletter).
They did a great job with reminding us of festive days like Valentine's Day and Easter, as well as, teacher's appreciation week.
Looking forward to another year at Merryhill.

It’s interesting how the people who complain about “the teachers don’t care about the students” never give a solid example. My kids have to schools in Menlo Park, Los Altos and Almaden. This is the FIRST school that has a responsive, hard working, caring staff and teachers. The work is rigorous but they work with STANFORD and their studies on appropriate amount of homework as they want the kids to have family time and extracurricular time. They believe in well-rounded kids. The kids these days have enough stress, this school knows that and does not believe in assigning busy work which most private and public schools do. If there is a bullying issue, they are on it! And they won’t hesitate to kick a kid out if they continue to cause problems. THAT is the way a school should operate.
Additionally, they have programs that no other schools in the Bay Area have. They work closely with NASA and have an ISS program where the students work with the astronauts and create projects that they will then send to the space station. Yvonne Cagle, NASA Astronaut, is one of the board members of the AMSE department (the STEM program). They have a top notch, state of the art conservatory
and every kind of sport and clubs that you can think of. The software they use for the animation classes is the same professional software that Pixar and other animation studios use and I could go on and on.
If you want to listen to those who don’t like the school for their own reasons then you are not getting the full story. SCHOOL IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT AND NO SCHOOL IS PERFECT. I have to wonder why the complaints from parents are in broken English? And kids who I’m sure don’t help themselves to make school a good experience. And yet they don’t give any solid examples of why they are unhappy, just that “they don’t care about the kids”. That is pure bull. If there has ever been an issue they have always been responsive and caring. None of the other private schools we have attended in Menlo Park, Los Altos and Almaden have been even close to how responsive and caring this school is.
Check it out for yourself instead of listening to bitter kids who hate school and parents who speak broken English and may not understand the school.
There are always going to be complainers. Make your own decisions.

This place is absolute -proof- that there is no higher priority for parents than the proper education of their kids. RCS is w/out a doubt the very -best- at what they do... training up children in the way they should go! America's founders were adamant that no denomination be supported, but that the Bible be the primary text in our schools. They were so determined 2 make it so they our leaders paid 4 the printing & distribution of America's 1st English-language Bible "...4 use in our schools."
