I really love this dojo! I'm so happy I found it last year. I previously practiced Kung Fu but that dojo didn't award you ranks based on skill; it was awarded based on how many classes you attended and ultimately purchased, so it was consumer based. This dojo is legit. Sensei Riva is 100% student-focused. You train in traditional Japanese shotokan style karate, and there are quarterly tests where she actually evaluates your skills in order to attain your next belt level. I joined in January 2017 and switched to the Advanced program in August which allowed me to meet my personal goal of getting green belt by 2018!! Karate has become a big part of my life and I'm glad it's with Sensei Riva and my other karatekas that I get to share it with. DOMO ARIGATO!

Great dojo, great training. I did approx two years of training there after five years of wrestling. The progression in technique was excellent, with a steady build up on new techniques as well as taking the time to perfect old ones for both brazilian and traditional jiu jitsu. The kickboxing classes made you work hard, and the sparring classes were well organized and purposeful. The sparring classes were typically small, which was great because they offered a more personal training experience with plenty of time to fight. There were people with different levels of experience, and all levels were managed really effectively. Being more experienced did not mean that you were wasting your time, and being new did not mean that your learning curve was extremely steep. Definitely recommend for anyone. I took the bus from downtown Ottawa to this location instead of something closer because of the quality.

I have been at Nam's for over a year and love the atmosphere and learning environment. It's a great investment in my opinion.

This school has a strong emphasis on self defense. The teacher is knowledgeable and works hard to make sure that every student receives individual attention. This is not sport Karate! Competition is not forbidden but it is not encouraged either. This Karate is old school martial arts for self defense. Reasonable pricing, the first four classes are free and family discounts are available.

You really would struggle to find more qualified and experienced martial art instructors anywhere in the area. I'd highly recommend it both for the martial arts instruction and the fitness training. All levels of experience are made to feel welcome and encouraged, and last i checked they offer a free trial so people can attend the class and see if they like it. Highly recommended!

I walked into this studio today and inquired about their no gi bjj. I was then promptly laughed at by a female instructor who was sitting down near the reception. Never have I felt so disrespected and upset, if this is the kind of treatment one recieves when inquiring about a program, particularly as a potential customer I can only imagine how one would be treated as a student. Martial arts is about respect and discipline clearly this instructor missed those lessons. If that is the quality of instructor they have I can't fathom in my wildest dreams how they could possibly be rated #1 in Ottawa.
