J Lee Tae Kwon Do
1103 Aviation Blvd, Hermosa Beach, California, 90254, United States
I started attending J Lee Taekwondo when I was eight years old. I loved it so much that I continued on to become an instructor at the school. Although I am no longer working there, I could not recommend a studio more highly. Grand Master Lee and Master Park are two of the kindest people I have ever met. Their love for teaching and excellence working with students of all ages is unmatched. I encourage you to give them a shot if you're in the market for a sport that will not only make you or your child stronger, but will also instill discipline and respect.

Women's Self Defense
I am currently a student of Anatolia Family Taekwondo. This weekend I was invited to a Women's Self Defense seminar taught by Master O'Brien (owner of the studio). The seminar was amazing. He invited both students and non-students. Master O'Brien gave the women there the skills and awareness to both recognize a bad situation and defend against one. He taught with a respectful approach. He has a great understanding and compassion for the women he is teaching. Master O'Brien has a real-world approach, telling us "It's ok to freak out", and then explaining what to do once we get ourselves back together. After the seminar, I felt empowered. My eyes had been opened to the strength and power I have within myself. Plus, it was incredibly fun :). I would highly recommend the women's self-defense seminar. I know I will be back for more.
CATABE Staff Bouting & Aikijitsu - Martial Arts
4400 San Juan Ave, Fair Oaks, California, 95628, United States
I was studying a different Martial Art and was getting close to my Black Belt when i was introduced to CATABE through my wife. Initially I attended some sessions as I thought that it would make great cross-training, but after just a few sessions, I realized that CATABE is a much more complete system of Martial Arts/Combatives. The Martial Art I was training in involves full-contact sparring and I honestly loved it, but CATABE includes a level of depth that I had not previously been exposed to. The experience and general knowledge of Kyoshi Ruben (8th Dan), Renshi Rubi (5th Dan) and the other instructors at the Inner Ripple school where the CATABE classes are held is very broad and based on real world experience, not just dojo training and competition. My conviction was so great that after a few weeks of exposure, I stopped training in the other art (despite being close to a Black Belt) and devoted myself to every session of CATABE that I can attend.

This martial arts club is great for beginners and experts. With classes nearly every day of the week it is hard not to find a time that works for your schedule. Great instructors who bring different approaches to each technique which helps develop a well rounded understanding of the art.

I've narrowed down my review to these features of Elite Training Center Hermosa Beach:
1. The attitude: This is a place that welcomes all: kids and adults, beginners and advanced. You'll find people there for different reasons... they want a workout… they want to know how to defend themselves… they want to learn Krav Maga, etc. But the commonality is that everyone cares for you. Instructors and fellow students want to help you learn and see you succeed. You'll learn how to switch on your "fierce mode" but with a smile.
2. The classes: Hermosa Elite offers Krav Maga and Kickboxing (Basic and Advanced), along with Youth classes. The benefit is that the classes are not overcrowded. When I first joined in summer of 2014 there were sometimes just two or three students, which was basically like a private session! Now that the school is growing, you'll find more friends to make. I've never felt that it was too crowded. Make sure to check out the class schedule and see if it fits with your schedule. Every so often, they will have informative seminars and organized trips.
3. The friends you'll make: I've met a lot of great people here. Like any team sport or activity, you'll feel like you're a part of family. There are seasoned fighters affiliated with the school, so you'll be a part of a family that no one wants to mess with. Plus you can go to their fights and cheer them on.
4. The facility: They keep the place top notch clean. I've been to hot yoga studios that make you wonder what's possibly living under the mats, but this place is clean. And if you're doing Krav Maga or Kickboxing, you're going to get sweaty and roll around on the mat. It's a good idea to wipe down your boxing gloves at the end of each session though.
5. The fees: Ok, so yes it's a contract. But considering I've joined gyms on contracts, I didn't see a problem with it. Like anything, there's always more good gear to buy. The instructors can help you find what you need. But it's a good idea to sit down and work this out for yourself carefully, depending on your financial situation. Truth be told, I have other hobbies that pull money out of my bank account exponentially faster than this activity.
6. The instructors: Yeah... these are the people you want in your life, if you're ever in trouble and surrounded by knife-wielding ninjas in a dark alley. The instructors at Elite are very informative, caring and want to see you grow.
And really… sometimes it just feels good after a long day to kick some pads and throw some punches. Thanks to ETC Hermosa Beach, I don't look like a complete goof doing it… only a mild goof… still got more training to do.
