We have eaten at Black Bear Diners all over the state of California and love them. The food and service are always very good and they are clean. Unfortunately, this was not the case with their Oakland restaurant. Our food and service were good but the restaurant was a mess. There was food on the floor, someone had spilled a drink in the ladies restroom and they gave our check to someone else and tried to get us to pay that person's check telling us is was about the same amount! I'm not kidding...after going around and around, we finally got the amount where we felt it should be but we never did get the correct receipt. We have learned our lesson that just because it says Black Bear Diner, doesn't mean we should expect a similar experience and we will never return to the Oakland restaurant again.

This is the second Denica's I've tried and I like this one a whole lot better. Baked goods amazing. I will be getting one of those huge cinnamon rolls soon. Very spacious and fast service. I love the fact that you order thatyou went ahead of time. It eliminates awkwardness of splitting checks for large parties and is more efficient. I also like that i can get water and coffee when i'm ready on my own. Chips and salsa wonderful. I can't wait to get back there. My go to thing is omelettes or benedict's.
Got there before 9am on Sunday and it wasn't packed. My advice is go early to avoid the rush. The double chocolate cookie is to die for.

Generally speaking, Castro Valley is not known for it's restaurant scene so three stars isn't half bad. There always seems to be plenty of seating and the food is halfway decent although the cocktails are a bit on the weak side. I don't ever go here by choice considering Hayward and San Leandro are border cities with incredible Mexican food but I don't avoid Don Jose's either.

We ordered the pad thai, the green curry, and the pineapple fried rice. All the dishes I tried were great. The staff was also very nice and didn't mind we brought our four kids along with us. We will definitely be back.

I love Doug's. The portions are huge, very reasonable and delicious. The service is fantastic. The wait time may be a bit long, but it's to be expected as it can get quite busy. All in all, a great place, with great atmosphere and great food.
